Cultural Competence for Competent Counseling
Each person’s culture both dictates what they can experience & what they cannot experience. In other words, culture shapes their personal universe. This is equally true for both clients & therapists. We are more effective as therapists when we understand & appreciate these dynamics. When our client’s feel, think & believe that we understand what their lives feel like to them, they open up to us & we are more effective.
The focus of this presentation will be on becoming sensitive to the cultural dynamics that contribute to their pain & suffering, so that we may help reduce that pain & suffering to the extent possible.
The general default mode in our field, is to assume that our general models of counseling / psychotherapy work equally well for all of our clients / patients; in other words: one size fits all. Effective therapists know better than that! We will discuss the need to understand & deal with different people in differing ways.
