Programs
We offer different types of mentoring depending on your time and interests.
- Community-based mentoring
Fulfilling relationships are built between children and caring men, women and couples, (19+) who want to share moments and experiences with children. Visits are arranged between the volunteer and the child’s parent. A one-year commitment is expected. - School-based mentoring
Adults meet with children weekly to build a one-to-one fulfilling friendship. Visits take place during the school year on the school grounds. A school-year commitment is expected. - Mentoring Children of Prisoners
Funded by the United States Department of Health & Human Services
As the number of men and women in our prison system grows steadily, another population also increases — the innocent children of prisoners. When parents are incarcerated, their children struggle to find their way, often without the benefit of a stable or consistent adult in their lives, and that’s where Big Brothers Big Sisters steps in.
Research shows that 70 percent of children of incarcerated parents will themselves at some point be incarcerated – unless they have positive adult intervention. That is why mentoring children of prisoners is a key component of Big Brothers Big Sisters’ goal to reach more kids, especially those who may face significant risk factors. Mentoring Children of Prisoners helps break children out of their potentially dangerous situation by matching them with adults who serve as mentors. It helps strengthen the concept of family, both for youth and their extended families through mentors that model safe and trusting relationships, healthy lifestyles and appropriate social behavior. Additionally, it encourages increased participation in community activities and raises the child’s interest in literacy and academics. - Group Activities
Ask us about upcoming activities. Some are planned for only the Little Brothers and Little Sisters and others are for all the matches (“Bigs & Littles”) and unmatched children. Organizations and companies often volunteer as “Bigs-for-the-Day” and donate money for activities.
There’s a child who would benefit from the time you have to share. If you want to learn more about volunteering, contact us or call us at (630) 844-9090.
